Special Discussion Held in Mullaitivu Over Illegal Fishing Concerns

A special discussion was held with fishermen’s groups in the Mullaitivu District following serious concerns raised by local fishing communities over illegal fishing activities,
According to the Minister of Fisheries, Aquatic and Ocean Resources, Ramalingam Chandrasegar, the meeting focused extensively on the issues affecting the livelihoods of fishermen in the area, as well as the urgent need to protect marine and fisheries resources from destructive and unlawful practices.
Subsequently, considering the gravity of the situation and the demands made by the public, a further discussion was held at the District Secretariat with the District Secretary. During the meeting, officials were advised to immediately implement the necessary administrative and legal measures to control illegal fishing operations in the district.
The Minister further stated that the government remains committed to taking firm and continuous action to safeguard the welfare of the people, protect marine resources, and ensure the long-term sustainability of the fisheries sector.
