14-Year-Old Boy Crosses Sea From India to Meet Facebook Love, Arrested in Talaimannar

A 14-year-old boy who allegedly travelled by boat from India to Sri Lanka to meet a girl he had befriended through Facebook has been arrested by the Talaimannar Police.

According to reports, the boy travelled from the Rameswaram area in Tamil Nadu, India, and crossed the sea to reach Sri Lanka. He had reportedly decided to undertake the dangerous journey after developing a romantic relationship with a girl in Sri Lanka through Facebook.

The boy reportedly did not have enough money to pay for the boat journey. As a result, he allegedly gave his gold chain to the boat operator as payment for taking him across the sea.

He is also reported to have had only around 280 Indian rupees with him during the journey.

After arriving in the Talaimannar area, the 14-year-old was taken into custody by the Talaimannar Police for allegedly entering Sri Lanka illegally.

He was subsequently produced before the Talaimannar Magistrate’s Court. Following the proceedings, the court ordered that the boy be placed in the care of a juvenile protection/remand facility.

The incident highlights the potential dangers young people can face through relationships formed on social media, particularly when online interactions lead them to make risky or illegal decisions.

The incident also underscores the importance of parents closely monitoring their children’s online activities and maintaining open communication about the risks associated with social media and online relationships.
