Court Issues Interim Order Suspending Removal of Jaffna Municipal Council Member
The Jaffna District Court has issued an interim order preventing the removal of Jaffna Municipal Council member S. Nisanthan from his position.
The order was issued yesterday (Tuesday) following a case filed by Nisanthan through his counsel, Attorney-at-Law Manivannan, challenging the decision to remove him from the Municipal Council.
Nisanthan was elected to the Jaffna Municipal Council representing the Tamil National People’s Front (TNPF). A few weeks ago, the party had reportedly informed the Election Commission in writing of its decision to remove him from his council membership on disciplinary grounds.
Following the party’s decision, Nisanthan sought an interim injunction from the Jaffna District Court preventing the implementation of the letter submitted to the Election Commission.
During the hearing, Attorney-at-Law Manivannan objected to the decision to remove his client on disciplinary grounds and argued that the allegations made against the Municipal Council member did not warrant the immediate removal of his elected position.
After considering the submissions, the judge issued an interim order suspending Nisanthan’s removal from the Jaffna Municipal Council until September 23 and postponed the case to that date.
