Jaffna Economic Center to Reopen After Three-Year Closure
The Jaffna Economic Center located in Mattuvil, will be officially reopened tomorrow (30) at 9:30 a.m.
The reopening ceremony will be attended by Minister of Fisheries Ramalingam Chandrasekar, Minister of Trade and Commerce Wasantha Samarasinghe, Deputy Minister of Trade and Commerce R.M. Jayawardena, Deputy Minister of Cooperative Development Upali Samarasinghe, and Northern Province Governor N. Vethanayahan.
The Jaffna Economic Center was first declared open on March 21, 2022, by then Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa. Built at a cost of Rs. 200 million, the center was established to provide farmers with fair prices for their produce while offering consumers fresh fruits and vegetables at affordable rates.
However, despite its grand opening, the center was shut down the very next day and has remained closed for over three years. Traders who had already paid deposits for shops were unable to commence business operations, leading to growing frustration among farmers and business communities.
Local stakeholders have long urged authorities to promote the center, provide concessions, and create opportunities for southern traders to engage in business there.
Now, one year after the new government assumed office, the center is set to resume operations, marking a significant development for farmers, traders, and consumers in the region.
