The parents of students from Vembadi Girls’ High School, Jaffna, have secured a significant legal victory against Northern Province education officials, accused of acting with bias during a provincial Tamil Day competition.

The case was filed after the school’s appeal regarding the Sangeetham (music) competition was unfairly dismissed. Vembadi Girls’ School, which placed second, argued that Hartley College, declared first place—should have been disqualified as their performance lacked the required Padavarnam. Despite the valid appeal, officials, including Additional Provincial Director of Education Lawanya, Deputy Director of Education (Tamil) Kavitha, and former Provincial Director of Education Bradley, rejected the claim without proper inquiry.

Concerns of favoritism arose as children of senior education officials reportedly participated in Hartley College’s winning team.

Following a petition by parents, the Northern Provincial High Court ruled in favor of Vembadi Girls’ School, stating that the officials acted with partiality. The court further ordered that Lawanya, Kavitha, and Bradley must bear the legal costs and barred them from involvement in future student competitions.

Parents are now urging the government to take disciplinary action under civil service regulations, stressing that education officials—who should uphold fairness and integrity—must not misuse their authority to compromise students’ opportunities.
