Mannar Wind Power Project Temporarily Halted Following Ministerial Meeting
A decision to temporarily halt the Mannar Wind Power Development Project has been made during a special meeting chaired by Minister of Electricity Aruna Karunathilake, held today (August 7) at the Parliamentary complex. The discussion focused on the issues surrounding the wind power project and the ilmenite mineral resources in the Mannar region.
The meeting brought together various stakeholders, including representatives from the Vanni District, civil society members, and the Mannar District Citizens’ Committee. Participants raised concerns about the environmental and human impact of the ongoing development work related to the wind power project.
During the discussion, civil society representatives from Mannar highlighted the damage already caused by the initial stages of the project. As a result, it was agreed that all parties involved should be consulted further before any progress is made, and until then, the project activities will be suspended.
Additionally, it was resolved that a special meeting with the President would be held in two weeks to further address the matter. Officials were also instructed not to transport equipment related to the wind power project to the island and to ensure all machinery is safely stored elsewhere until further notice.
