Starting January 2026, the United States will suspend crab imports from Sri Lanka, a move expected to severely affect around 7,000 families in the Northern Province who depend on the crab industry for their livelihood.

The export ban, part of a U.S. initiative to protect marine mammals, follows Sri Lanka’s delay in providing certification proving compliance with marine mammal protection standards. The country reportedly failed to submit the required documentation within the two-year deadline.

Northern Sri Lanka, especially the coastal stretch from Mannar to Neduntheevu, plays a leading role in exporting blue crabs to the U.S., generating approximately one million U.S. dollars in monthly foreign exchange. Exports typically occur every six weeks.

Four new crab-processing companies were launched this year in the North, employing around 2,000 women, including many from female-headed households. The suspension is now threatening their only source of income.

The U.S. government is expected to reconsider lifting the ban only after its enforcement period begins, raising fears of significant economic hardship across the Northern fishing communities.
