The land on which the Kopay Police Station is located has officially been handed over to its rightful owners today, under the supervision of the Jaffna Court Registrar.
The Kopay Police Station, situated on Rasapathai Road in Jaffna’s Kopay area, had been under police control and use for the past 30 years. The owners of the property had repeatedly appealed to various authorities to have their land returned, but their efforts had yielded no results.
In 2019, seven owners of the land filed a lawsuit at the Jaffna District Court, seeking the return of their property. After six years of legal proceedings, on June 27 this year, Jaffna District Judge C. Satheeskaran delivered the verdict ordering the police to vacate the property and hand it over to the rightful owners.
However, even after more than two months following the court’s ruling, the police had not complied with the order.
Today, Wednesday, in compliance with the court order, the Jaffna Court Registrar visited the Kopay Police Station premises, oversaw the removal of police personnel, and formally handed the land over to its owners.
The Kopay Police Station has now been temporarily relocated to the Jaffna Police Station premises. Arrangements are being made for it to resume independent operations at a new location.
The landowners, who had been living elsewhere for years due to the police occupation of their property, expressed joy and relief upon finally regaining possession of their land.
