Paris Event Promotes ‘Anthony’ Film Highlighting Sri Lankan Tamil Coastal Life
A media and community interaction event for the upcoming Tamil film Anthony, produced by Osai Ramana, was held in Paris, France on March 7.
The film, which focuses on the lives and culture of Tamil coastal communities in Sri Lanka, is seen as an effort to take Tamil cinema from the island to the global stage.
The event took place on Saturday evening at Sothiya College of Arts, located in the Tamil commercial area of Paris. The gathering brought together members of the Tamil diaspora, media representatives, and community organizations ahead of the film’s upcoming premiere in France.
During the event, the film’s France distributor Bharath Mathi addressed the audience alongside veteran actors Dayanathi and R. Gunapalan, who are part of the film’s cast.
Speaking at the gathering, Bharath Mathi noted that although films produced about Tamil communities in Sri Lanka—both locally and in the diaspora—have sometimes had limitations, Anthony stands out as a full-length film that captures many important aspects of the community’s life and struggles. He added that the film gives a sense of pride and confidence to the Tamil film industry.
Veteran actor Dayanathi shared personal reflections on the film, saying it reminded him of the coastal life in his homeland, mentioning areas such as Kurunagar, Pasaiyur, Navanthurai, and Allaipiddy. He emphasized that the film portrays the authentic lifestyle and struggles of sea-faring communities.
Actor R. Gunapalan said that after a long gap, a film with significant production investment has been made, expressing hope that Anthony will pave the way for more high-quality films in the future.
Representatives from several Tamil community associations in France also attended the meeting. Many said the film’s preview had given them confidence and reminded them of the maritime culture and heritage of their homeland.
Participants at the event collectively encouraged the Tamil community in France to attend the film’s premiere screening scheduled for March 14, urging families and community groups to come together and fill the theatre to support the film’s success.
