Cabinet Approves Tourism Development Plan with Special Focus on Jaffna
The Sri Lankan government has given special attention to strengthening tourism infrastructure in the Jaffna District as part of a broader national tourism development initiative.
Cabinet approval has been granted for a comprehensive tourism development plan covering the period from 2026 to 2028. The plan aims to identify key tourism destinations across Sri Lanka and enhance their infrastructure facilities to boost the country’s tourism sector.
The project has been designed to promote sustainable tourism development across all nine provinces of the country. The total estimated cost for the nationwide tourism development programme is approximately LKR 2,667.03 million.
As part of this initiative, special emphasis has been placed on improving tourism-related infrastructure in Jaffna District. The Department of National Planning has approved a project worth LKR 131.02 million specifically aimed at developing tourism infrastructure in the district.
The Jaffna tourism development project is scheduled to be implemented in 2026.
The proposal was submitted by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment and Tourism and subsequently received Cabinet approval. With these developments, Jaffna is expected to play an important role in Sri Lanka’s future tourism-driven economic growth.
