Political leaders across Canada have issued statements marking the 17th year of remembrance of the Mullivaikkal Tamil Genocide, calling for truth, accountability, and justice for the atrocities committed against the Tamil people during the final stages of Sri Lanka’s civil war.

As part of the commemorations, leader of Canada’s Conservative Party, Pierre Poilievre, released a statement remembering the victims of Mullivaikkal.

In his statement, he said the Sri Lankan civil war had ended “in tragedy and bloodshed” with the massacre at Mullivaikkal seventeen years ago. He noted that on Tamil Genocide Remembrance Day, people mourn the victims of “one of the great crimes of our time,” while honouring the survivors and renewing calls for justice.

Poilievre also recalled with pride how former Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper had boycotted the 2013 Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting held in Sri Lanka on principle. He stressed that those responsible under the Rajapaksa administration must face justice and added that Canada cannot become a safe haven for perpetrators of genocide.

Meanwhile, Canada’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Anita Anand, also issued a statement marking the remembrance day.

She stated that Canada remembers and honours the victims of the Tamil genocide and stands together with Tamil communities across Canada and around the world in remembrance, reflection, and the continued pursuit of justice, peace, and human rights.

Several other Canadian political figures also shared messages commemorating the Mullivaikkal remembrance, including Energy Minister Tim Hodgson, Members of Parliament Rob Oliphant, Michael Coteau, Hedy Fry, Patrick Brown and several provincial and municipal leaders such as Vijay Thanigasalam, Marit Stiles and Silvia Gualtieri.
