UK Launches £2.34 Million Programme to Support Sri Lanka’s Coastal Fishing Communities
COLOMBO: The United Kingdom has launched a £2.34 million initiative, Resilient Waves, to strengthen the climate resilience of Sri Lanka’s coastal fishing communities and protect marine biodiversity.
Funded by the UK Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) through the Blue Planet Fund, the programme will run until March 2029 in Batticaloa and Mullaitivu, and will be implemented by Acted and its partner organisations.
The project aims to restore coral reefs and mangroves, promote sustainable aquaculture, strengthen fisheries governance, and expand economic opportunities for women in coastal communities.
Launching the programme, British High Commissioner Andrew Patrick said the initiative reflects the UK’s long-term commitment to supporting Sri Lanka’s environmental and marine conservation efforts.
Acted Country Director Ciaran Lavery said the project was selected from more than 370 global applications, with only four receiving funding.
The initiative will also connect coastal communities with private sector value chains and financial institutions to ensure sustainable livelihoods beyond the project’s completion.
