Colombo witnessed a glittering celebration yesterday at the prestigious Derana Film Awards, regarded as Sri Lanka’s premier film ceremony, where Director Mithi Sutha was awarded the Most Promising Director.

In a gathering that brought together the finest talents of Sri Lankan cinema, Mithi Sutha’s recognition stood out as a remarkable story of perseverance. Without any cinematic or financial background, and relying solely on a mobile phone, he rose from Sri Lanka’s war-torn regions to capture international attention for his people. He also holds the distinction of being the first to bring a mobile-shot feature film to the big screen in Sri Lanka and has won the most awards for films made on mobile phones.

“This award belongs entirely to my people, who have stood by me and lifted me for the past 15 years,” Mithi Sutha stated after receiving it.

The ceremony also spotlighted the film “Uzhi”, directed by Ranjith Joseph, scripted by Theepachelvan, and starring leading political figure Sugas. The film was nominated in three categories—Best Music Composer, Best Supporting Actor (Jhony Andren), and Best Upcoming Actor (Akash Thiyagalinkam).

Among these, Akash Thiyagalinkam was awarded Best Upcoming Actor for his role in Uzhi.
